A Guide to Ukraine’s 24 Oblasts

4. December 2012 by Dasha 0 Comments

Like many nations, Ukraine is divided into a series of administrative regions, each with its own capital city, or center. Ukrainians call these regions oblasts, and the country contains 24 of them, along with the autonomous republic of Crimea. Cities Kiev and Sevastopol also enjoy special status.

Most of Ukraine’s oblasts are home to around one or two million people, though some, like Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk, contain much more. Much like states in America, views on political and social issues vary widely from oblast to oblast, and each region is famous for its distinct industries and attraction.
