11. December 2009 by Michelle 0 Comments

When visiting Lviv, Ukraine, you may not plan a sightseeing stop at a cemetery. However, one of the most beautiful and historic locations in Lviv is the Lychakiv Cemetery.

Dating back to 1567, it is also one of the oldest and largest graveyards in Europe and now offers guided tours.

Visitors are often awestruck by the grief, strength, and sacrifice that is remarkably portrayed in the sculptures and monuments at every grave site. Over 400,000 are laid to rest at this cemetery, from the most elite politicians, scientists, and artists, to middle and lower class families and soldiers.

Many of the grave markers are true works of art, as can be seen below.

Schedule a tour at Lychakiv Cemetery during your trip to Lviv and you can say you visited one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.
