Bond with a Russian Bookworm

26. June 2012 by Dasha 0 Comments

Love to read? You’re not alone. Millions of people around the world love nothing more than curling up with a great novel, including several of the ladies of HRB. Thanks to translations and modern printing practices, you don’t have to speak Russian to bond with a special lady over a good book. With that in mind, here are four Russia-centric genres to check out. Don’t forget to ask your Russian bookworm for her own reading recommendations!

Classic Russian Novels

A number of classic novels have emerged from Russia including Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Anna Karenina, Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, and Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. Pick one up to learn more about the rich history and culture of Mother Russia.

Russian History Books

If non-fiction books are more your thing, there are hundreds of tomes chronicling Russia’s fascinating history. Robert K. Massie’s Nicholas and Alexandra tells the story of the Romanovs, while Orlando Figes’s Natasha’s Dance examines the cultural history of Russia. Other highly-recommend options include Peter the Great and A People's Tragedy: A History of the Russian Revolution

Historical Fiction Set in Russia

If classic novels and history books sound too daunting, why not try historical fiction? Many classic Russian novels fall under historical fiction, but there’s also Paullina Simons’ Tatiana and Alexander trilogy, Robert Alexander’s The Kitchen Boy, and David Benioff’s City of Thieves, among others.

Intercultural Relationship Guides

Intercultural relationships can be tough, but there’s a lot of help in the form of relationship guides and marriage manuals. Oksana Kornienko Leslie’s How to Survive an International Marriage is particularly relevant to members of HRB, as is Author Lynn Visson’s Wedded Strangers: The Challenges of Russian-American Marriages.
