Chernobyl: Site of Meltdown is now a Tourist Big Draw in Ukraine

Looking for a unique, strange, off the beaten path, spot for sightseeing during your vacation to the Ukraine? Believe it or not the hottest (no pun intended) tourist attraction in the Ukraine is Chernobyl, site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster.

For between $180 and $250 visitors can take a tour of the site of the reactor, which has now been covered with tons of concrete. Then they are whisked away to Pripyat, the town near the plant which was bustling city of more than 50,000 people and within two days became a ghost town. Touring this municipality, visitors will see eerie sites right out of a Hollywood horror movie. School books left sitting on desks, stores shelves still lined with goods, wind rustling leaves on playgrounds where you swear you hear children playing. The football (soccer) stadium now has a small forest now growing where men would score goals and people would shout and cheer. Ironically, the new amusement park in central Pripyat was schedule to open on the May 1, 1986, five days after the accident. Now there is nothing but spooky silence in a place where bumper cars, a Ferris wheel and other amusement park rides sit and rust waiting for riders that will never come.

For those daring enough to visit this town frozen in time, tour operators will bring a Geiger counter or provide radiation suits to give visitors a sense of safety.  A visit to this chilling site is a reminder of how man’s pursuits can lead to him to folly.
