Donbass Arena, Ukraine

Ukraine’s new Donbass Arena opened to a packed house as American R&B Singer Beyonce performed for the first time in the country on August 29th.

Due to the enormous amount of tickets sold, the arena’s management ended up issuing 4000 more tickets than originally planned and opening up the arena floor or “fan zone”, normally blocked off due to worries that the field may be damaged by fans.

FC Shakhtar, the resident football club will be moving over from their previous stadium, RSC Olimpiyskiy which had a capacity of 26,100 football fans soon. The new Donbass Arena will be able to house almost double that at 50,149 Ukrainian football fanatics. FC Shakhtar is notable as being the 2009 champions of what is currently the UEFA Europa League.

The Donbass Arena represents an important point in Ukraine's joint bid with Poland to host The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. Despite administrative and bureaucratic setbacks, the Donbass Arena is an enormous boost to the infrastructure and a great step toward fulfilling Ukraine’s promise to provide four 5-star stadiums for the event.
