Gentlemen in the Brisbane area have an opportunity to check out a real treat. Empire, an international Spiegeltent show, features enticing acts from around the world, including fit and flexible Ukrainian acrobats The Gorilla Girls. The titillating show combines aspects of burlesque, vaudeville and circus attractions.
Ukrainian acrobatic trio The Gorilla Girls met in gymnastics training when they were children. According to the show’s website, Kateryna Rudenko, Alina Reutska and Alona Stekolnikova train six days a week and practice their act before and after every show. Their tour with Empire first began in New York City, and now takes them across Australia, with two previous stops in Melbourne and Sydney.
Audiences will also get the chance to see the graceful acrobatics of Russian contortionist and hoop dancer Elena Lev. Elena toured with Cirque du Soleil for years, perfecting her signature hula hoop act by incorporating contortion and gymnastics.
Spiegeltents, large traveling entertainment tents decked out in ornate mirrors and stained glass, were popular venues in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were transported around the countryside so that entertainment acts could do shows in towns that lacked proper dance halls. Only a few of the ornate tents remain.
Empire is performed in a 700-seat antique Spiegeltent filled with beveled mirrors and plush booths with rich velvet upholstery. Viewers can refresh themselves at the speak-easy style bar and get an up-close look at the show provided by the intimate stage.
