Is your favorite Ukrainian girl decorating pysanky this week? It's easy to get caught up in the Easter spirit as this is one of the most important holidays of the year in countries of the Former Soviet Union.
There's egg decorating inspiration all over Ukraine as the colorful symbols are springing up everywhere.
The Easter festival Pysankovyi Rai at Ivan Franko Park in Kyiv begins this week and runs through June 5th. From professional craftsmen and politicians to amateur decorators and students, eggs will be submitted from nearly every region of the country to be included in the display.
The region that sends in the most eggs will receive nearly half of the submissions to create an Easter egg garden in the city. Mayors of more than a dozen cities will also compete for the title of Best Easter Egg. The winner will receive 5,000 rose bushes to enhance their city.
Organizers of the festival expect over 100,000 eggs to be submitted. After the celebration, many will be shipped to the Pysanka Museum in Western Ukraine.
Residents and visitors of Lviv will also begin discovering eggs this week as more than 50 of them will be hidden around the city. Produced by the best local craftsmen, the eggs will be decorated with traditional Ukrainian ornaments and modern artistic images.
The street festival will also feature egg decorating workshops, folk performances, Easter films screenings, and a Best Easter Cake Contest.
