Elton John Seeks a Home for Ukrainian Boy

7. January 2010 by Daniel 0 Comments

After being denied a chance at adoption, British musician Elton John is looking to find a home for a young Ukrainian boy.

The 17-month-old boy named Lev, who is HIV-positive, lives in a Ukrainian orphanage with his three-year-old brother.

While he has previously expressed a preference not to adopt children, John told reporters in September that he changed his mind after meeting Lev. “He has stolen my heart,” John said at the time.

John and his male partner, filmmaker David Furnish, attempted in September to adopt the boy. However, the Ukrainian government denied the adoption request, citing a Ukrainian law that prohibits homosexuals from adopting children. Authorities also said it was not legal for John, 62, to adopt the boy as the law requires no more than 45 years difference in age between the guardian and the adopted child.

Despite these setbacks, Furnish told Closer magazine that he and John were looking to buy a home for Lev and his brother in Ukraine and pledged to send the children financial assistance.

“We will get them a home as it would be a long uphill battle to bring them over here,” Furnish said. John and Furnish also plan to travel to Ukraine regularly to spend time with the boy.
