Former Russian Aircraft Carriers Now Theme Parks in China

3. June 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

Tourists in China don’t expect to see pieces of Soviet history during their visit, but at two military theme parks that’s exactly what they’ll find. Here are two Chinese theme parks featuring former Soviet war ships.

Minsk World

Located in Shenzhen, Minsk World is based around the former Soviet (later Russian) aircraft carrier the Minsk. A Chinese company acquired the Minsk in the late 1990s and the ship has been the centerpiece of Minsk World ever since.

Minsk world opened in 2000 and has attracted millions of visitors. Tourists can view the flight deck and hangar as well as exhibits featuring the ship’s living quarters and armament. The staff at Minsk World also perform a variety of musical numbers, a few of which you can see in the video below. A boat ride around the starboard side of the Minsk is also a popular activity.

Tianjin Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park

Tianjin Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park centers on the Kiev, an aircraft carrier that served in the Soviet and Russian navies from 1975-1993. The Kiev has been part of the military theme park since 2004.

The former warship features model helicopters, grenade launchers, anti-tank guns, and other military equipment, as well as decommissioned fighter planes. Visitors may also stroll along Kiev’s lower decks and take a look at the ship’s engine rooms, control rooms, captain’s office, and twenty-foot torpedoes.

If you're ever in Shenzhen or Tianjin, China, be sure to check out these fascinating (if unusually placed) pieces of Soviety history.
