18. January 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

Valenki are Russia’s traditional winter footwear. These felt boots have existed in the country for generations and Russian athletes may even sport them in the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. In honor of this traditional footwear, the city of Moscow has erected a giant valenki boot at the city’s Festival of Crafts as a symbol of Russian winter.

A factory in the Russian city of Yaroslavl was the only factory that agreed to take on the unique project of creating a giant valenki boot, and workers spent two months creating the enormous boot by hand. The valenki boot weighs more than 300 kilograms (661 pounds) and is outfitted with a special ladder that allows people to climb inside and pose for photographs.

The giant valenki boot will be on display in Moscow until January 19th. After that, officials will present it to The Museum of Records in Moscow where it will permanently reside.
