The European Water Polo Championship occurs every other year and women from 8 countries compete. Last week, the tournament was held in Zagreb, Croatia and Russian women won the gold medals. Greece grabbed silver and the Netherlands nabbed bronze.
Since 1997, the Russian women’s water polo team has swam away with success, earning 1 silver, 3 bronze, and now 3 gold medals in the last 3 championships. They are closing in on the Netherlands and Italy who boast 4 gold wins each.
Some of the Russian ladies celebrating this win were also teammates at the 2000 Olympic Games when they won bronze. That was the first year that women’s water polo was included at the Olympics.
