The Eurovision Song contest is a European tradition which started in the 1950s as a televised competition between every European nation. Each country submits a song and each of the songs are performed on a live television show. The winner is decided in a 50-50 vote between a jury of music professionals and a television call-in vote where viewers can select their favorite song. It is a great source of European and National pride.

Ukraine has been participating in the Eurovision song contest since 2003, with Ukraine lady Ruslana even winning the 2004 contest, and the event being hosted in Kiev in 2005. In 2009, Ukraine submitted the song “Be My Valentine” by singer Svetlana Loboda, which while not winning, made it through to the Contest’s final round.

Born a Kiev girl in 1982, Svetlana Loboda sang from an early age and was enrolled in a specialized music school while still in childhood. Her first hit single in Ukraine came when she was a member of Ukrainian girl-pop band Nu Virgos in 2004, and she went on to a successful solo career less than a year later.

While not winning in 2009, Svetlana has expressed an interest in representing her home country again in 2010, when the Eurovision contest takes place in Norway.
