10. June 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

Born July 29, 1984, in Kiev, Ukraine, rhythmic gymnast Anna Bessonova comes from a highly-talented athletic family. Her father, Vladimir Bessanov, was a professional soccer player who competed in the FIFA World Cup in 1982, 1986, and 1990, while her mother, Viktoria, was a two-time world champion rhythmic gymnast. It was she who introduced Anna to the sport.

Though Anna’s mother originally wanted her to pursue ballet, Anna was always attracted to gymnastics and at age 5 she began training with former rhythmic champions and mother/daughter coach team Albina Deriugina and Irnia Deriugina. Anna followed a grueling training schedule and this rhythmic training along with her early ballet studies, helped Anna develop a unique, elegant style that set her apart from other performers.

Throughout her illustrious career, Anna has won over 24 World Championship medals, 24 European Championship Medals, 10 World Cup medals, and 6 World Games Medals. She also won the bronze individual all around medals at the 2008 Beijing and 2004 Athens Olympics.

After wowing audiences for several years, 25-year-old Anna recently decided to officially retire from rhythmic gymnastics. On March 21, 2010, she gave her final performance at the Grand Prix Deryugina Cup in Kiev, Ukraine. Though fans were sad to see her go, they respect Anna’s decision to leave the sport at the top of her game.
