How did Ukraine declare its Independence?

24. August 2009 by Gregg 0 Comments

In 1991, after a coup attempt in the Soviet Union by hard-line communists tried to depose President Mikhail Gorbachev, Ukraine formally seceded from the Union by signing their Declaration of Independence. Drafted by Soviet Dissident Politician Levko Lukyanenko, the Ukrainian Act of independence declared the formation of an independent Ukrainian State in accordance with the United Nations charter promising Nations the right to self-determination.

That same day, a public referendum was proposed by both the Parliamentary majority and opposition leaders and it was conducted in December of that same year. The Ukrainian people voted 90% in favor of the Act of Declaration of Independence and Ukraine’s status as an independent country was soon recognized by the entire world.  Days after Ukraine signed its act Moldova, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan followed suit and Gorbachev resigned from office.

Ukraine celebrates its 18th year of independence this year, like every year since 1991 the date of celebration is on August 24th.
