How to Achieve the Perfect Shave

1. October 2012 by Masha 0 Comments

Whether you're trying to look dapper for a new profile picture or an in-person meeting, a fresh shave should be on your list of things to do. Sure, some ladies like a little scruff, but for making a good first impression, the clean-cut look is usually your best bet.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to achieve the perfect shave.

  1. Wash your face thoroughly. Use an exfoliating cream to better prepare your skin.
  2. Soak a washcloth in warm water and hold it to your face for 30 seconds to help soften and loosen the hair and skin.
  3. Apply shaving cream evenly in upward circular motions, making sure to uniformly cover all sections that you wish to shave uniformly.
  4. Use an unused or relatively new razor for the closest and least painful shave.
  5. For the top section of your beard, shave from the top of the beard to the edge of your jawline in long, even strokes.
  6. To shave under your chin and your neck, shave from the bottom of your neck upwards (with the grain) to prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs.
  7. Pull your skin taut with your free hand for a closer shave.
  8. To shave your upper lip, stretch it over your front teeth to tighten the skin, and shave downwards.
  9. Rinse your razor after each stroke to keep it from becoming clogged up with hair.
  10. Wash off excess shaving cream with warm water, and look for sections of beard you may have missed. Wet your razor to shave these remaining sections.
  11. After shaving, use a toner containing vitamins, aloe extract, etc. rather than an alcohol-based aftershave. Alcohol will dry out your skin, and possibly cause damage.
  12. Apply moisturizer after toning to complete your shave.
While it sounds simple, some guys often forget the important first and last steps, like soaking the face to soften the hair and skin before shaving and then moisturizing afterwards. You may choose to shave right after a hot shower, since you've already washed and exfoliated your face, and can bypass steps 1 and 2.
