Interesting Tale Behind an Expensive Champagne

31. December 2009 by Michelle 0 Comments

Champagne will always remain a symbol of wealth and luxury. This bubbly beverage is typically served in times of celebration and special occasions, while making drinkers feel refined and sophisticated. While many versions can be purchased inexpensively, others can be quite pricey.

If you ever become a guest at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow, you may enjoy a glass of the most expensive champagne in the world.

The unique story behind the Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck champagne is what makes it so expensive; along with its incredible age. Large crates of the sparkling wine were en route to Czar Nicholas II of the Russian Imperial family in 1916 when a shipwreck off the coast of Finland caused the cargo to be lost at sea.

Over 80 years later, deep sea divers discovered a sparkling treasure on the sea floor of the Gulf of Finland; 200 bottles of the 1907 Heidsieck champagne, well preserved and nicely chilled.

Bottles are offered for purchase to the wealthy guests of Moscow’s Ritz-Carlton hotel for a mere $275,000, or around $40,000 per glass. If you have distinguished taste and don’t mind paying a small fortune for excellence, you might try to get your hands on a bottle of the Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck champagne on your next trip to Moscow.
