January 22nd is Unity Day in Ukraine

Monday will be a day of celebrations, rallies, protests, and processions in Ukraine. Den Sobornosti is Unity Day which marks the anniversary of the unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic.

 

It was January 22, 1919 when the Treaty of Unity was signed and solemnly proclaimed on Sofiyska Square in Kyiv. Ukraine marked Unity Day for the first time in 1990 when people held hands to form a human chain between Kyiv and Lviv.

  

Ukrainian news organizations are reporting that seven parties and non-governmental organizations have applied to hold mass events in the capital on Monday. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is paying serious attention to the preparations and is planning to attend many of the events.
