John Lennon Immortalized in Russian Town

29 years ago today, John Lennon was shot outside his New York City apartment by deranged fan Mark David Chapman. This has long been part of American Pop Culture. The Beatles’ have undeniably been the most lasting and influential rock band of the last 50 years.

What you may not know is that 11 years ago the industrial Russian city of Chelyabinsk decided to have a Lennon Street, to commemorate the former Beatle’s 60th birthday. A local fan submitted the vote to the city council and it was overwhelmingly approved. Even Sir Paul McCartney sent his thanks for the gesture.

The Beatles were hugely popular in Russia during Soviet times, when fans braved official disapproval to collect records of Western rock groups.

Here’s an appropriate Beatles tune (“Back in the USSR”) for the occasion, which is a parody of the All-American Beach Boys’ sound.
