Though Spring officially began last week, Kiev is a long way from warm breezes and budding flowers. A record snowfall blanketed Ukraine’s capital over the weekend, blocking roads and stranding thousands of motorists in their vehicles.
“Ukrainian authorities told its public sector workers in Kiev to stay home on Monday after what forecasters described as the biggest snowfall in the capital for over a century,” reads a report on globalpost.com.
Kiev is currently in a state of emergency, with soldiers helping stranded motorists dig their vehicles out of the snow. The city is also experiencing a shortage of bread and dairy products, and public transportation is limited. Around 20 inches of snow fell on the city in just one day.
The cities of Ternopil, Rivne, Volyn and Khmelnytsky are also struggling with the unprecedented snowfall.
Though Kiev is used to snow, this winter has been particularly brutal. In December, the city received more snow in two days than it normally receives in two winter months. The rapid accumulation of snow blocked city streets and caused branches to crack and break.
Some residents of Kiev have decided to make the best of the wintry weather and have taken to skiing and sledding down city streets. Check out the video below.
Though the women of Kiev may be offline today, there are plenty of single Ukrainian women online and ready to chat. Take a look!
