Kiev's “Red Bull Flugtag” to Feature Fun Flying Machines

18. June 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

This weekend, Kiev will host Ukraine’s first “Red Bull Flugtag” competition, a light-hearted event featuring homemade, human-powered flying machines.

The premise of the competition is simple: competing teams will launch their machines from a six meters high springboard poised over the Rusanivsky Canal. Judges will evaluate each team’s machine on the distance it travels, the creativity of the design, and the showmanship of the competing team. Over 700 teams applied to be a part of Kiev’s event, but only 40 made the cut. The top-scoring team will win a trip to the “Red Bull Air Race” in Lisbon, Portugal, while the second place team will earn a trip to an aviation museum in Austria. Third place winners will get a free parachute jump.

The Flugtag competitions are extremely popular and typically draw thousands of spectators. Kiev’s festivities begin at noon on Saturday, June 19th and will include the participation of a few celebrity guests.

Here are a few fun Flugtag photos.
