Kryivka: Secret Underground Restaurant

11. January 2012 by Masha 0 Comments

KryivkaFor gentlemen traveling to Lviv to visit their favorite Ukrainian brides, this restaurant is a must-see! Kryivka is devoted to the Ukrainian insurgent army called UPA during World War II. The entrance isn't easy to see. In fact, the word "kryivka" means "secret place" in Ukrainian.

If you knock too loud and fast, the doorman will suspect you are an enemy spy and not let you through. However, if you have the proper knock and know the secret password (Slava Ukraini! or Glory to Ukraine!), you will be allowed inside. (Even Kryivka's website requires the password!)

But before you can join the other rebels underground, the doorman will offer you a shot of honey vodka. As the proverb goes, "If you are a spy, you die like flies. If are not, you go downstairs and have a great evening."

There are three halls, including one for non-smokers. They are all thoroughly decorated with WWII guns, helmets, and other battle accessories. The menu looks like an old partisans’ leaflet with photos and period anecdotes. Even the names of the authentic Ukrainian dishes are entertaining, such as "The Hero's First Sacrament", "Freaks with Guns", and "Hacked to Pieces".

If you're interested in a fun and historical experience, escort your Ukrainian girlfriend to Kryivka in Lviv!
