Love Story of Italian Man, Ukrainian Woman Immortalized in Kyiv Monument

8. May 2013 by Masha 0 Comments

When Luigi Pedutto met Mokryna Yurzuk in 1943 at an Austrian prisoner-of-war camp, he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with the Ukrainian beauty. However, they were sadly separated after only two years.

60 years later, the senior citizen soul mates were reunited on a Russian television show in 2004 called Zhdi Menya, or Wait For Me, and they still have the same strong feelings for each other.

He still lives in Italy and she still lives in Ukraine but they are visiting each other every year. Luigi has even been shopping around for a permanent residence in Mokryna’s southern Ukrainian village, located on the outskirts of Kryvyi Rih.

Kyiv city officials decided to immortalize this long distance love story that spans decades by erecting a monument in Khreshyatyi Park near Lovers’ Bridge called "To Love and Fidelity."

During the unveiling ceremony yesterday, a young couple chose the romantic occasion to share their wedding vows and become newlyweds. Luigi and Mokryna are also engaged to be married.
