Ukrainian Mail Order Bride on Oprah Show

14. January 2010 by Michelle 0 Comments

On the Oprah Winfrey Show yesterday, women from around the world discussed love and marriage. There were women from Egypt, India, as well as a mail order bride from Ukraine.

Lera Loeb and her American husband Steve have been married for 6 years and she described life in Ukraine and why so many women use Russian dating websites to find husbands.

Most Marry Young

Lera explained how women in Russia and Ukraine begin thinking about finding a husband and getting married as young as 17 years old. 20 can be considered old, and if women are not married with children by age 25, some doctors tell women not to bother. This major cultural difference from the Western world gives insight into why Russian women are so eager to marry.

All About the Family

Lera also shared how important a strong and happy family life is for most women of the former Soviet Union. They feel like Western men are more capable of providing for a family than many Russian or Ukrainian men. These women always put husband and family first, which is also why many Western men seek Russian brides.

Steve’s Story

Lera’s husband Steve mentioned his side of the story, admitting that he never expected to find his life partner on a Russian dating site. He hoped for some fun and interesting conversations and perhaps to make some new friends. Once he read the first email from Lera, he said he was intoxicated. They chatted for 3 months before he couldn’t wait any longer and traveled to Kiev to meet her. His Russian dating adventure was the best experience of his life.

Mail order marriages are often a controversial and criticized topic, but millions of people have found their other half this way. Oprah said over 100,000 women each year become "mail order brides", finding husbands from all over the globe via the internet. The bottom line is that it really doesn’t matter where or how you find your perfect match, as long as you are happy.
