The impression that you make on your Russian or Ukrainian sweetheart’s friends and family carry great weight with her. If you are invited to her or her parents’ home for dinner, good manners go a long way toward getting a good reaction. A few of our top etiquette tips:

Bring a Gift

It is customary in both Russia and Ukraine to bring a gift for your hostess when you are invited to someone’s home. Flowers are a good choice; make sure that you bring an odd number of blooms, and that you avoid yellow flowers. Even numbers of flowers are for funerals, and yellow signifies romantic disinterest. Chocolates or a The gifts you bring don’t have to be extravagant; a simple token shows your appreciation of your host’s hospitality.

Particulars of Table Manners

Most elements of good table manners in Russia and Ukraine are the same as those at home: keep your elbows off the table but both hands in sight. There are, however, certain others that are unique to those countries.

For instance, it is polite to leave a small amount of food on your plate. This tells your host that their hospitality has been generous. Try a bit of every type of food that is offered. Instead of just thanking your hosts for food, (sincerely!) tell them how much you enjoyed the meal.

Sharing Toasts

When you toast at a Russian or Ukrainian gathering, you do not clink your glasses together. If you pour a glass, only fill it two-thirds full. Do not refill your own glass at the table; allow your host to do so. If you have a medical condition that precludes consumption of alcohol, share this with your host; otherwise, they may feel snubbed by your refusal of a drink.

Being warm, friendly, personal and polite will go a long way toward convincing your Russian lady’s family that you are the right man for her. Brush up on the particulars of Ukrainian and Russian table etiquette, and your meal with her family should be a success.
