Moldova Celebrates Independence Day

27. August 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

Today, citizens of the Republic of Moldova celebrate Independence Day, a day marking the anniversary of Moldova's 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.

Celebrations kicked off with a flower-laying ceremony at the statue of Prince Stefan the Great, a national hero and the founder of the Moldovan state. Most businesses are closed on this historic day and citizens celebrate by attending parades, concerts, fireworks, and other outdoor events.

Hilary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of State, wished Moldova a happy Independence Day, stating:

“On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Moldova on your country's 19th anniversary of independence this August 27 … I wish the Moldovan people a safe and festive celebration, and hope to continue strengthening and deepening the cooperation between our countries in the years ahead.”

Below are a few videos of Moldova Independence Day celebrations from years past.
