7. September 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

Erected in 1981 in remembrance of World War II, Kiev’s massive Motherland Monument is the center of the city’s National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War. With a height of 203 feet and a weight of approximately 500 tons, it’s no surprise the impressive monument is one of Kiev’s most recognized landmarks.

The Motherland Monument, one of the tallest statues in the world, holds a sword in one hand and a shield in the other. The sword is 16 meters long and weighs 9 tons, while the shield is 13 meters by 8 meters and contains the Coat of arms of the Soviet Union. Yevgeny Vuchetich, a prominent Soviet sculptor and artist, designed the statue, and a team of scientists and architects helped build and erect the impressive monument which is made from gigantic blocks of stainless steel. According to conclusions of leading experts, the Motherland Monument should last at least 150 years.

Here are a few pictures of this awe-inspiring Kiev attraction.
