Sochi, Russia, host city for 2014 Winter Olympics

The Olympic and Paralympic flags ended their long journey today as hundreds of Sochi residents attended the special ceremony in the host city of the 2014 Winter Games.

A charter flight carrying the flags, along with high profile guests and athletic heroes, traveled from Vancouver to Russia. Then a special Sochi 2014 branded train transported the entourage into the city, where a motorcade delivered them to the Sochi City Administration Square.

The Olympic and Paralympic hymns were played as the flags were raised by Sochi 2014 Ambassadors Nikita Kriukov, 2010 Olympic cross-country skiiing champion, and Irek Zaripov, four-gold 2010 Paralympic champion.

Sochi 2014 President and CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko said:

“This is a historic day for Sochi as my native city has become the official keeper of the main symbols of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements. We are next! Now, the most crucial and difficult stage of preparation stands before us."

The Olympic and Paralympic Flags will be kept in the foyer of the Sochi Administration Building. The flags will be raised on special occasions, including International Olympic Day on June 23rd and the anniversary of Sochi’s Olympic bid victory in Guatemala on July 4th.
