While in America, pies are mostly considered a dessert with a sweet fruity filling, Russians enjoy pies in a wide variety of ways. These Russian pies are called pirogi and also known as pyrih in Ukrainian.

Made from a yeast dough and glazed with egg, these pies can contain fruit, jam, or cottage cheese. More often they are filled with vegetables like potatoes, mushrooms, onions, and cabbage, and also different kinds of meats and fish.

There are smaller versions of these Russian pies called pirozhki which are individual sized baked or fried pies.

This tasty dish is also popular in other countries of the former Soviet Union and is sold by street vendors as fast food. Ukrainians and Russians typically serve the savory pirogi with other traditional cuisine such as borscht.
