I know it's out of season, but I wanted to share with you a new holiday called the Day of Family, Love & Fidelity, being celebrated all over Russia on July 8. The holiday’s main aim is to encourage and support those, who have been successful in maintaining long term marriages. In fact, couples all across the country receive medals on this holiday if they have been married for either 25 or 50 years.

The holiday is now so big that many couples have chosen it as their wedding day. However, it’s not only couples who are ecstatic over this exciting new holiday, but single Russian women are excited about it too. One Russian lady is quoted as saying, “Valentine’s Day isn’t ours. It came from the West. This one is ours…it will strengthen families.”

What about those married couples who have the occasional spat? This holiday is intended to help those couples too. In Moscow, these spatting couples will soon be directed to a “reconciliation bench” built specifically for this day. Here, they will be thrown together by a sloping seat. The couple will then have to remain in this position until they have successfully worked out their altercation.

Valentina Petrenko, who is on the Committee that suggested the holiday be put into place, shares in the excitement saying, “This is a holiday celebrating common values. It has no boundaries and no nationality.”
