Russia Wins Key Match with Slovenia

16. November 2009 by James 0 Comments

Russia won the first round in the win or stay home World Cup playoff matches with Slovenia 2-1 Saturday night in Moscow. Dinyar Bilvatledinov scored twice to ensure a victory for the home side.

The game was not easy for either side as both teams played a strong defensive game. But in the 40th minute Bilyaletdinov, who plays for Everton, received a pass from Tottenham’s Roman Pavlyuchenko near the top of the box, juked two defenders and blasted a shot in the upper right corner, to give Russia the 1-0 lead.

The second half did not slow down the Russian attack. With Prime Minster Putin looking on, Bilyaletdinov’s first shot was cleared by a defender but he followed up his shot and buried it in the back of the lower left corner of the net, sending the home crowd into frenzy of elation.

Later, Bilyaletdinov almost scored a hat trick when his header from a cross just missed the top corner.

Slovenia caught Russia sleeping in the 88th minute when an initial shot from Robert Koren was deflected by Russian goalkeeper Igot Akinfeev, at which point Slovenian striker Nejc Pecnik out jumped the Russian defender and headed a well placed ball in the back of the net, giving Slovenia a key away goal.

It is now do or die time for Russia. They will surely face a very hostile, partisan, and loud Slovenian crowd and a desperate Slovenian side Wednesday night in Maribor, Slovenia. Will they be able to get a victory to put them into the World Cup?   Supporters will know the answer in 48 hours.
