FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, today announced that Russia will host the men's World Cup in 2018. England, Spain/Portugal, and the Netherlands/Belgium were also under consideration. It will be the first time Russia has hosted the international event.

"You will never regret the decision; let us make history together,” said Igor Shuvalov, Russia’s first deputy prime minister, after the big news.

The news of Russia's victory suprised many as the nation must upgrade much of its existing infrastructure, including building 13 new stadiums, before the big event. The projects are expected to cost billions of dollars. Russia will also host the Winter Olympics in 2014.

Qatar defeated the United States to host the World Cup in 2022.
