Russian, Ukrainian Women Both Advance to Eurovision Final

The 58th annual Eurovision Song Contest is going on now in Malmo, Sweden and after the first semi-final last night, both the Russian and Ukrainian contestants have made it to the final.

 

Born in Murmansk, Russia, 27-year-old Zlata Ognevich grew up in the Crimean city of Sudak. She’s representing Ukraine for the third time at Eurovision, finishing fifth in 2010 and becoming the runner up in 2011.

22-year-old Dina Garipova was born in Zelenodolsk, Tatarstan, Russia. Last year she won the Russian version of the singing competition The Voice.

The second phase of the semi-final takes place tomorrow and then 20 finalists will compete Saturday night. The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television programs in the world, as well as one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world.
