Russian women once again demonstrated their supreme athletic skills by winning their second straight title at the 2010 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship yesterday. Hosted by Japan, 24 teams were competing since October 29. Japan upset the USA to claim the bronze, while Brazil was beaten by Russia to settle for silver.

Towering 30-year-old Yekaterina Gamova scored 35 points in the final match and was named Most Valuable Player. At 6’9”, Gamova is one of the tallest female athletes in the world. Her teammate Tatiana Kosheleva received the Best Spiker award.

“It wasn't just about volleyball today," Russian coach Vladimir Kuzyutkin said. "Brazil played very well, and both of us together could demonstrate a great quality of volleyball. I'm very thrilled that we could win, and I'm very happy for my team. This wasn't only about sport today, it was about character.”

The Russian women’s team has medaled in all but 3 editions of this championship. They now boast an amazing record of 7 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze medals, and are the most successful team in FIVB Women’s World Championship history.
