While the women's basketball team of the Soviet Union were Eurobasket Champions 21 times, the ladies of Russia's team had only won gold twice, until earlier this week. They not only secured their third European Championship title in Poland, but they also won a spot at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The attractive athletes defeated the Czech national team in the semifinal, and then beat the Turkish team 59-42 in the final. They admitted the tournament was tough and they made some massive mistakes at the start. However, they pulled together at the end and achieved victory.

"Our aim was to win the first place. We have shown to all that Russia is a basketball nation, and we are the strongest on the continent. I am very happy as we could book a place at the Olympic Games," Ilona Korstin said. Korstin won the right to cut the net, while Elena Danilochkina was named most valuable player.

The Eurobasket runners up, teams who placed 2nd through 5th, will now have to play qualification matches to earn their spots at the London Games.
