Russian Women to Watch at the 2012 Olympic Games

The 2012 Olympic Games kick off in London July 27th. Here are a few Russian women athletes to check out.


Lyubov Galkina – Shooting

Pictured center right, Lyubov Galkina, 39, won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and hopes to earn at least one more in London this August. Will she succeed?


Natasha Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina – Synchronized Swimming

Russia’s synchronized swimming team and duet performers dominated the last three Olympic Games, winning all six possible gold medals. Natasha Ishchenko, 26, and Svetlana Romashina, 22, hope to continue that proud tradition in this year’s duet event.



Elena Savelyeva, Sofia Ochigava, and Nadezhda Torlopova – Boxing

The London Olympics will be the first Games to feature women’s boxing, and Russia’s Elena Savelyeva, Sofia Ochigava, and Nadezhda Torlopova hope to represent their country well.

Anastasia Vasina and Anna Vozakova, Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova – Beach Volleyball

After a lackluster performance at the 2008 Olympic Games, Russia’s beach volleyball team is eager to prove their stuff at this year’s event. Vasina and Vozakova are pictured below.


Viktoria Komova, Russia

Viktoria Komova, 17, is thought to be the best gymnast in Russia right now. The teen is the 2010 All-Around Youth Olympic Games Champion and the 2011 World Uneven Bars Champion. Will she win a gold medal?
