Russian Yacht Embarks on Arctic Journey in an Attempt to Set New Record

4. June 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

Sailors of the Russian yacht Peter I are attempting to set a new world record by completing an around-the-world journey through the Arctic Ocean. If they succeed, the eight-person crew will be the first sailors to circle the northern seas by yacht.

"The expedition will cross the northern sea route, which extends 12,500 [nautical] miles [23.000 km], 3,500 in conditions of thick ice,” Captain Sergei Murzayev told Russian news agency Ria Novosti. “This is the shortest and most dangerous route around the world.”

While crew members have been modifying the yacht's steel hull since last Fall, the yacht will not be equipped with an ice-breaker.

Peter I left St. Petersburg on June 1 and is expected to return by mid-November. During the voyage, the yacht will dock at a variety of international ports, including the United States, Canada, Greenland, and Iceland.
