Talented Ukrainian Pianist, Valentina Lisitsa

4. August 2010 by Christy 0 Comments

Born in Kiev, Valentina Lisitsa began playing the piano at the age of 3 and performed her first solo just one year later. She eventually moved to the United States, where she is now a citizen, and has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert venues. In addition, Valentina has released 8 CDs and 3 DVDs, including a best-selling set of Chopin's 24 Etudes which held the coveted #1 spot on Amazon.com’s music video list. However, there was a time when the beautiful and gifted pianist wondered if her musical career was destined to sputter and fail.

A Dying Career

Five years ago, Valentina’s concert career was dying and she couldn’t seem to revive it. Her manager had recently passed away and a once steady stream of work had trickled to a halt, causing Valentina to consider giving up her music career for more stable work with the CIA. Before sending her application, however, Valentina decided to give YouTube a try. She uploaded a few performance and practice videos and waited to see if they would generate some interest.

A YouTube Sensation

The experiment paid off! To date, each of Valentina’s 154 videos have attracted thousands of views, with her most popular video (see below) drawing nearly 900,000. Her YouTube channel has over 15,000 subscribers and Valentina’s online popularity has caused some fans to refer to her as the “Justin Bieber of classical music.” Thanks in part to the videos, Valentina was able to find another manager and work steadily once again.

Valentina currently resides in rural North Carolina (she jokingly calls herself a “redneck pianist”) with her husband, fellow pianist Alexei Kuznetsoff, their young son, and two cats.
