The World-Famous Gowns of Voloka, Ukraine

Though Ukrainian wedding traditions differ from those in the West, brides around the world adore donning a poofy white dress on their special day. Voloka, a small village in western Ukraine, has capitalized on this shared tradition by becoming one of the most famous bridal gown producers in the world.

“Voloka is the post-Soviet capital of nuptials,” The Guardian reports. “Every third building is a wedding shop, and buyers come from the other side of the world, attracted by the high quality and low prices of the garments.”

Offering hand-stitched dresses between $50 and $500, Voloka attracts customers from places like Russia, Romania, Belarus, Moldava, and Kazakhstan, among others. Some Voloka shops even have customers from America and Western Europe.

“Recently one American came to us, choosing dresses for the boutique which he plans to open in the US," Kateryna Yeremitsa told The Guardian.

While the fall of the Soviet Union decimated many Ukrainian communities, Voloka prospered thanks to their gorgeous gowns and skillful seamstresses. Today, busloads of young women commute from the nearby city of Chernivtsi to work in one of Voloka’s many sewing shops. The women earn a high wage, though competition in the area is growing fierce.

"The children of those who started sewing dresses 20 years ago have grown up and begun doing the same," noted one long-term dress maker.

Planning to wed your Ukrainian sweetheart? She doesn’t have to visit Voloka to get a gorgeous dress. Many Ukrainian wedding dresses are available online. Check out Alibaba.com or DoveDress.com for a few options.
