Thinking of Moving to Russia or Ukraine?

2. August 2012 by Dasha 0 Comments

In a recent survey, we discovered that a significant number of men would consider moving to Russia or the Ukraine to be with a woman they met online (56.6%, to be exact). Does this sound like you? If so, here are seven things to consider when moving abroad for love.

The Cost of Moving

Moving abroad is expensive and this is especially true if you have children, pets, and vehicles to export. Do you have enough money for airfare, moving fees, pet and vehicle transports, storage costs, etc.?

Cost of Living

Many people assume life in the FSU is very inexpensive, but this isn’t necessarily the case. It can cost a lot to live in major cities like Kiev or Moscow, and not all jobs can support the lifestyle you’ve grown accustomed to.

Job Opportunities
Speaking of jobs, are there decent opportunities in the area you wish to live? Can you support yourself and any dependents you might have? Finding a job may be a challenge, especially if you don’t know the language.

If you’re moving with children or plant to have kids in the future, how are the schools in the area you want to live? Ukraine and Moscow are renowned for their rigorous education standards, but bad schools do exist.

Though Russia and the Ukraine are generally safe, there are certain areas that can be dangerous, especially to foreigners who don’t speak the language. How safe is your intended destination? What is the crime rate like?

Service in certain areas of Russia/Ukraine may be spotty. For example, public buses may be frequently late or the local internet service may be slow or prone to failure. In some places, there’s no public transportation or internet service at all. Is this something you can cope with?

Your Ability to Assimilate
Perhaps the most important thing to consider when planning a move abroad is your ability to assimilate. Can you learn the local language? Eat the food? Learn the different ways of life? Fit into the local culture?

Moving abroad can be a great experience that will enrich your life forever. However, it’s also a huge decision and one you shouldn’t take lightly. If you’re thinking of moving to Russia or the Ukraine, carefully research your options so there are no nasty surprises once you step off the plane.
