Tips for a Long Distance Relationship

Being in a long distance relationship has its challenges. You spend a lot of time missing your partner and often feeling quite lonely. However, there are a lot of things you can do to stay upbeat and hopeful while you wait for the time that the two of you can be together.

Keep up social ties by getting involved in something.

Volunteer for a cause or charity you are passionate about, such as an animal rescue organization. Take up a group sport. Find a pub that has a trivia night, become a regular and get to know the people who go. It doesn’t matter what you do; what matters is developing relationships with like-minded people. Having a regular activity doesn’t just keep you busy; it allows you connection and companionship that can be lacking while you are waiting for your Russian love to be able to come here and be with you full-time.

Start a long-term project.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn or accomplish? For instance, if you have always wanted to run a long distance race, take on a training program. You can also learn a language (Russian, perhaps!) or learn how to play an instrument. Having a measurable, long-term goal can make the time go by more quickly, and make you feel that you are using that time instead of just waiting for the long distance part of your relationship to be over.

Keep your relationship with her fresh.

Long-distance couples often have to go the extra mile to make one another feel warm, cared for and happy while you are apart. Make long-distance “dates” where you’ll have coffee together over video chat. Remember important dates and mile stones and send her small gifts or messages to celebrate. Talk on the phone or internet chat often.

Most of all, maintain a positive and hopeful attitude. It may seem like forever, but, the time will pass, and before you know it, she will be here and you will be working on your future together.
