Today in 1941 – Germany Invades the Soviet Union, Lithuania Revolts

22. June 2010 by Admin 0 Comments

Operation Barbarossa was the code name for the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II. Over 4.5 million Axis troops invaded the USSR in what was the largest military offensive (and highest casualties) in history. While it was an overall failure, the Axis did conquer large areas of the Soviet Union, including Ukraine. From the attack, sprang a folk song called “The 22 June Song” dedicated to this day.

Simultaneously, Lithuania – who had been under unwanted Soviet control for a year – took advantage of the German invasion and rose up against the regime and established a Provisional Government, free of Soviet control. However, within a week, the Germans too control of the entire country and established their own administration.
