Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 reached the surface of the Moon on September 14, 1959.

Landing to the east of the Sea of Serenity after 33.5 hours of flight, the mission confirmed that there were “was no appreciable magnetic field and no evidence of radiation belts [on] the Moon.”

Less than a month later, the Luna 3 became the first to take photos of the far side of the Moon. The Luna program had fifteen successful missions between 1959 and 1976 and studied, for the first time, the Moon's chemical composition, gravity, temperature and radiation.
