Transfiguration of the Savior, Apple Feast Day

Russians celebrating Apple Feast Day

Also referred to as the Triumph of Soul Transformation, this holiday is considered one of the twelve Great Feasts for Russian Orthodox Christians. It honors the day that Jesus stood upon Mount Tabor, spoke with Moses and Elijah, and was called “Son” by God. Many believe it to be one of the greatest miracles mentioned in the Gospels.

All night vigils begin this evening and Russian women will present baskets of apples to be blessed by priests. This time of year is traditionally apple harvest time in Russia so the holiday has come to be known as Apple Feast Day. This year, the abnormal heat wave has caused Moscow apple trees to bloom a second time, which the faithful believe is a special celestial sign.

Once the apples are blessed, they are considered ripe enough to eat and many delicious dishes are prepared, such as sharlotka, which is Russian apple cake. An old folk tradition holds that those who make wishes while eating apples on this holiday will see their wishes come true. Many believe apples are essential to good health and well being.

Like most holidays, Apple Feast Day is celebrated with family gatherings. One famous family gets together each year around this time at Yasnaya Polyana, the Estate-Museum of Leo Tolstoy. The Russian novelist’s great-grandson Vladimir Tolstoy organizes the reunions, but this year is specially significant since it marks the 100th anniversary of the writer’s death. 130 descendents from all across the world are en route to Yasnaya Polyana to take part in the event, and they also plan to celebrate the Transfiguration of the Savior and Apple Feast Day.
