Ukraine and Japan may be miles apart in both distance and culture, but the Ukraine-Japan Center in Kiev aims to bridge the distance.
According to the Center’s official website, The Ukraine-Japan Center is dedicated to the "training of quality business personnel who will contribute to the economic development of Ukraine," as well as “the promotion of social, economic, and cultural exchange between Ukraine and Japan.”
The Center supports cultural exchange in many ways. The organization frequently hosts forums covering Japanese culture and politics, as well as workshops and demonstrations. At these events, Ukrainians can learn about calligraphy, Japanese crafts, the traditional clothing of Japan, tea ceremonies, origami, and more. Art courses and mizuhiki and haiku clubs are also available.
Ukrainians interested in learning Japanese can take language courses ranging from beginner to advanced, while business and mutual understanding courses help participants gain a better understanding about Japan’s cultural environment. According to the Center’s website, many students use their learned language skills to find jobs with Japanese companies.
Japan Centers exist in countries transitioning to market economies, and can also be found in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, and Kazakhstan.
