Ukraine’s Pavlik the Next Psychic Octopus?

13. April 2011 by Christy 0 Comments

Paul the psychic octopus attracted a lot of media attention last year after correctly predicting the results of eight FIFA World Cup matches and even weighing on Russia’s upcoming presidential race. The prognosticating pus sadly died in October, but officials at Kiev's Alushta Aquarium believe they have their own psychic cephalopod.

"The octopus's name is Pavlik and the staff of the aquarium will teach him to see into the future, like the German octopus Paul," said Viktor Zhilenko, the aquarium's director.

Pavlik is the Slavic version of the name Paul and Zhilenko said the octopus shows promise of living up to his famous namesake. Pavlik passed a series of tasks set up by his keepers and correctly predicted Barcelona’s victory over Shaktar, though he initially leaned towards the Ukrainian football club. The final score of the game was 5 – 1.

"Our visionary watched the match," Zhilenko told Ukraine's Komsomolskaya Pravda. "We put the aquarium in front of the TV so he could watch the game. Hopefully, he likes football."

Hailing from Singapore, Pavlik is strong as well as potentially psychic.

"Pavlik weights only 300 grams, but he can raise aquarium decorations, weighing 10 kilograms with the help of his tentacles,” Zhilenko boasted.

Pavlik will have a chance to prove his skills next Tuesday when making a pick for the Champions League return leg. Naturally, Zhilenko and the aquarium team will also want to know Pavlik's thoughts on the upcoming Euro 2012 which Ukraine is hosting.

Though Pavlik hasn’t yet weighed on Russia’s presidential race, Paul’s keepers will reveal the late octopus’s prediction next year.
