Ukrainian Businessman Sergei Tigipko Gaining Ground in Presidential Polls

While many were seeing the Presidential race as being a clear-cut 2-person election, with Yulia Tymoshenko and Viktor Yanukovych being  the clear favorites out of a wide collection of candidates, a recent poll has indicated that the race may not be as predictable as originally thought. Sergei Tigipko, a former finance minister under Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has apparently gained ground in an opinion poll conducted by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center.

The former Minister, an amateur bodybuilder and founder of PrivatBank – today one of Ukraine’s largest banks - entered the race with little fanfare but built attention quickly, sinking over 11 million dollars into his campaign. Tigipko’s major positions include criticism of Ukraine’s alienating policy towards Russia, which he feels has only weakened Ukraine by turning the countries against each other, and to develop stronger alliances with both Russia and the Western World.

The multi-millionaire has chosen a road many of the other candidates have not. Running unaffiliated with any party and spending what is largely his own money on the campaign. His 4.4% popularity places him behind the major candidates but ahead of the current President, Viktor Yushchenko.
