Ukrainian Prime Minster Just Not Other Pretty Face

12. October 2009 by James 0 Comments

Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyrivna “Yulia” Tymoshenko certainly is one of the most attractive world leaders but like other striking Ukrainian women she has the brains to match her beauty.

Early Life

Yulia was born on November 27, 1960, in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine while it was still part of the USSR. When she was just 3 years old, her father abandoned the family, leaving Yulia to be reared by her mother. She married Oleksandr Tymoshenko son of mid-level Soviet Communist Party official in 1979.  In 1980 the couple welcomed daughter Eugenia in the world. Yulia quickly showed her political skills in the communist youth party holding a variety of positions. She graduated with a degree in economics in 1984 and earned her Ph.D. in economics a short time later.

Career

After her graduation she worked as four years as an engineer-economist in a manufacturing plant in Dnipropetrovsk. In 1989, under perestroika, she founded of a very successful chain of video rental stores. She then moved on to become the general director of the Ukrainian Petrol Corporation. Then in 1995 she became president of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine which is where she both gained personal wealth and political influence.

Rise to Power

In a landslide victory, Tymoshenko was elected to the Ukrainian parliament in 1996. Re-elected in 1998, she became one of the founders and leaders of the All-Ukrainian Union political party. From 1999-2001, Tymoshenko served as Deputy Prime Minister for fuel and energy. In February 2001, she was arrested on charges of forging documents and smuggling gas between 1995-1997. Later, the charges were considered baseless and dropped. Many believed they were trumped up by the then President Kuchma whom she later campaigned to have removed from power.

In January 2005, she was appointed acting prime minster by President Yushchenko. Less than a month later she was confirmed as Prime Minster by parliament. Later that year, Forbes Magazine named her one of the world’s most powerful women. As with most parliamentary systems of government, the Ukraine has had numerous party coalitions that have collapsed and reformed since Tymoshenko was confirmed and re-elected as Prime Minster.

Presidential Hopeful

On June 7, Tymoshenko announced that she will be a candidate for the Presidency of Ukraine. The election will be held in January 2010. Last month she kicked off her campaign with a huge concert in Kiev which featured many of the Ukraine’s top pop music acts. On numerous occasions, Yulia Tymoshenko has been named as one of world’s most beautiful and powerful female political leaders by various worldwide news outlets.
