Universal Set to remake Russian Blockbuster Movie "Black Lightning"

2. July 2010 by Gregg 0 Comments

Hollywood studio Universal have recently announced their intention to remake the Russian superhero action flick, Black Lightning, which ignited the Box Office in Eastern Europe last year. Acknowledged as Russia’s response to not only the wave of American Superhero films, but also the phenomenal success of Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, “Black Lightning” told the tale of a boy who inherits his father’s car – a car that it is later revealed can fly and fight crime.

Universal has tapped Timur Bekmambetov, the original film’s producer, to direct the remake. Bekmambetov is well known for directing Russia’s First Blockbuster action movie Night Watch and its sequel Day Watch, Russian action movies that captured the spirit of the Matrix movies while adding a darker and uniquely Russian vision, and for directing Wanted, the hyper-violent assassin thriller starring Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie.

Timur Bekmambetov has also been tapped to direct a sequel to Wanted, and has also been in talks with fellow director Tim Burton to co-helm the movie “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter”, featuring the legendary American President taking on the hordes of the undead.
