Viktor Yanukovich Snubs Presidential Debate

1. February 2010 by Gregg 0 Comments

Exercising his earlier promise that he would not debate rival Yulia Tymoshenko, Viktor Yanukovich failed to show up for the previously scheduled Presidential Debate on February 1st. Tymoshenko, Ukraine’s current Prime Minister spent the entire debate time herself, taking questions from what would have been the debate’s moderator.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, in an address to the television audience, declared Yanukovich to be a “coward” while also proclaiming him to be a puppet for his advisors and that his election would open the floodgates for corruption in the Ukrainian government again.

The Prime Minister pledged that she would help develop and support small businesses in Ukraine, along with undoing the corrupt restructuring of Ukraine’s banking system and pledging to hold those responsible accountable for the damage that was done.

Viktor Yanukovich had stated earlier that he felt a debate would degenerate into “empty talk and complete lies” and pointed our Tymoshenko as pouring “torrents of dirt and evil” in her campaign. Despite an unpopular attempt to get into power in the 2004 election, Yanukovich is currently considered the favorite to win in the 2nd round of voting.
