Viktor Yanukovych to Be Inaugurated on February 25th

Despite the challenges of presidential rival Yulia Tymoshenko, Viktor Yanukovych will be inaugurated as president of Ukraine on February 25th.

Yanukovych defeated Tymoshenko on February 7th, but the prime minister has so far refused to concede. Tymoshenko claims the election was marred by fraud, charges she hopes to prove in court before the inauguration next week.

"Tomorrow the court battle begins,” said Alexander Turchinov, Tymoshenko’s campaign chief. “The court must reach a conclusion before the inauguration. Otherwise the process has no point."

Last Saturday, Tymoshenko claimed that European election monitors, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), had video proof of election fraud and would support her challenge in court. However, OSCE officials deny this claim.

In a statement on Monday, Joao Soares, the head of the observation mission from OSCE said: “The OSCE does not have any video evidence of election fraud as she reportedly claimed in a speech last Saturday."

In general, Yanukovych’s election has been widely accepted in Ukraine and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recently invited the President-elect to Moscow to discuss improving relations between Russia and the Ukraine.
